BMTN STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP

Scholarship Description & Guidelines

Description: The Black Music Therapy Network, Inc. Student Scholarship was designed to contribute to the advancement of Black students within the field of music therapy. An award in the amount of $1500 will be offered annually to degree-seeking students who are of African descent and racially positioned as Black to offset the cost of attendance at a music therapy academic program. Academic costs may include tuition, fees, room and board, books, and/or instruments. Eligible applicants must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment at a music therapy program and demonstrate financial need. To be considered for this scholarship, all applicants must submit an online application by November 30, 2023. Applicants must state the professional benefit of receiving this award, demonstrate financial need, and provide documentation of enrollment or acceptance to a music therapy program. The award recipients will receive email notification by December 15, 2023. Please direct any questions to the Awards & Scholarship Coordinator at financialsupports@blackmtnetwork.org.

Eligibility Criteria 

To qualify for this award, applicants must:

  1. Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an approved music therapy program and/or completing a music therapy internship

  2. Identify as a person who is of African descent and racially positioned as Black

  3. Submit a completed application form.

Detailed Guidelines

  1. BMTN will offer student scholarships annually

  2. Scholarship funds should be used to offset educational expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, books, and/or instruments.

  3. To qualify for this award, applicants must:

    • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an approved music therapy program and/or completing a music therapy internship

    • Identify as a person who is racially positioned as Black and/or of African descent

    • Submit a completed online application that details the following questions: 

      • How will receiving this scholarship support your academic goals? 

      • If you do not receive this scholarship, what other avenues will you use to support your financial need?

    • Complete and submit the online application by the announced date to be considered for the award. 

  4. Application information will be announced on the BMTN website (www.blackmtnetwork.org), the BMTN Facebook group and page, and other media outlets. The online application can be accessed at (https://forms.gle/m1q9e5asRpMLqKy76). 

  5. Award recipients will be notified via email by December 15, 2023, and the award will be sent directly to the award recipient.

  6. Award recipients may apply for subsequent years, but preference will be given to new applicants.

 

Review & Disbursement Procedure

  1. Prior to independent masked review of applications, the Awards & Scholarships Coordinator will verify that all applicant information provided is complete and that the applicant is a current student.  If any information is missing, the application may be denied. 

  2. The Awards & Scholarship Coordinator will select three (3) BMTN volunteers to participate in an independent masked review of applicant responses. 

  3. Each reviewer will evaluate applicant responses based on the following factors:

    • Educational costs including tuition, fees, room and board, books, and/or instruments

    • The potential benefit of this scholarship in students meeting academic goals

    • Alternate sources of financial support.

  4. Selected award recipients will be notified via email by December 15, 2023.

  5. A BMTN Treasurer will disburse the award by mail or by bank transfer.
