BMTN Professional Development Grant

Grant Description & Guidelines

Description: The Black Music Therapy Network Professional Development Grant offers monetary assistance to support the professional advancement and growth of the Black music therapy community. An award in the amount of $500 will be offered to two (2) persons of African descent and racially positioned as Black to aid in music therapy career-related expenses (e.g. continuing education costs, purchase of instruments, professional supervision, business development, or CBMT examination fees) that contribute to the applicant’s professional advancement or continued improvement of professional knowledge, skill, and effectiveness. Eligible applicants must be a board-certified music therapist or have completed coursework in music therapy and are certificate-seeking. To be considered for this award, all applicants must submit an online application with a one-page narrative (400 to 500 words) stating how they would professionally benefit from this award. All applications are due August 31, 2020. The narratives will be assigned an ID number, then distributed and reviewed independently by members of a masked review panel.  The award recipients will receive email notification by September 15, 2020.  Please direct any questions to the Award & Scholarship Coordinator at blackmtnetwork@gmail.com.

Eligibility Criteria 

To qualify for this award, applicants must:

  1. A board-certified music therapist or have completed coursework in music therapy and are certificate-seeking

  2. Identify as a person of African descent and racially positioned as Black

  3. Submit a completed application form

Detailed Guidelines:

  1. BMTN will offer two (2) professional development grants awarded annually.

  2. Funds should be used towards expenses related to professional development such as continuing education costs, purchase of instruments, professional supervision, business development, or CBMT examination fees.

  3. To qualify for this grant, applicants must:

    • A board-certified music therapist or have completed coursework in music therapy and are certificate-seeking

    • Identify as a person of African descent and racially positioned as Black

    • Submit a completed online application with a one-page narrative (400 to 500 words) demonstrating how this grant will contribute to the applicant’s professional growth and development

    • Complete and submit the online application by the announced date to be considered for the grant 

  4. Application information will be announced on the BMTN website (www.blackmtnetwork.org), the BMTN Facebook group and page, and other media outlets. The online application can be accessed at (https://forms.gle/53t29qf23tduJKFj6). 

  5. Grant recipients will be notified via email by August 31, 2020, and the grant will be sent directly to the grant recipient.

  6. Grant recipients may apply for subsequent years, but preference will be given to new applicants.

 

Review & Disbursement Procedure:

  1. Prior to independent masked review of applications, the Award & Scholarships Coordinator will verify that all applicant information provided is complete and that the applicant is a current board-certified music therapist or have completed coursework in music therapy and are certificate-seeking.  If any information is missing, the application may be denied.

  2. The Award & Scholarship Coordinator will select three (3) BMTN volunteers to participate in an independent masked review of applications. 

  3. Each reviewer will evaluate applicant responses based on the following factors:

    1. Costs associated with career-related expenses such as continuing education, supervision costs

    2. The potential benefit of this grant in meeting professional goals

  4. Selected grant recipients will be notified via email by August 31, 2020.

  5. A BMTN Treasurer will disburse the grant by mail or by bank transfer.
