NUESTRA VISIÓN

Visualizamos radicalmente un mundo en el que la humanidad de los negros se actualice por completo y la función liberadora de las prácticas musicales negras se afirme por completo en las artes, la salud y la cultura. Esta visión tiene sus raíces en el trabajo abolicionista que defiende la colonización de las tradiciones musicales indígenas negras y su mercantilización dentro de los entornos de salud que tienen como objetivo separar a las personas negras de su linaje curativo. Estamos comprometidos a sanar la justicia y desmantelar la violencia relacional y estructural hacia las personas negras a través de la defensa, la educación y la acción basadas en la comunidad. El trabajo de BMTN se esfuerza por administrar eficazmente esta visión dentro de las comunidades en las que vivimos y servimos.

 The Black Music Therapy Network, Inc. apoya la salud y el bienestar de las comunidades negras a través de la música. Nuestro trabajo se centra en prácticas musicales basadas en la comunidad y culturalmente sostenibles que apoyan la liberación y la libertad de los negros. En consonancia con nuestra misión, nosotros:

  • Proporcionar programas e iniciativas basados en la música que amplifiquen las tradiciones musicales indígenas negras y profundicen el conocimiento de la música y la salud para apoyar a las comunidades negras;

  • Proporcionar programas educativos que aborden las necesidades integrales de los profesionales en la intersección de la música y la salud y mejoren la eficacia de los profesionales dentro de las comunidades a las que sirven; y

  • Influir en el cambio estructural, institucional, sistémico y relacional que afirme la humanidad de los pueblos negros y apoye su salud y bienestar a través de iniciativas de defensa y basadas en las necesidades que brinden acceso continuo a servicios de musicoterapia y educación.

Melita Belgrave
Chair, Board of Directors

Dr. Melita Belgrave is an Associate Professor and area coordinator for music therapy at Arizona State University. She also serves as the Associate Dean for Culture and Access in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona. When she isn’t working, you will almost always find Melita in her garden growing her own food.

Kendra Ray
Treasurer, Board of Directors

Dr. Kendra Ray is a licensed creative arts therapist, board-certified, music therapist and dementia program director a Menorah Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. With over a decade of experience as a clinician and researcher in settings for elderly adults, Kendra directs a program offering creative, non-pharmacological interventions for people with dementia in Brooklyn, NY, and is the Principal Investigator for an Alzheimer's Association research fellowship investigating music-based interventions for people with dementia and their caregivers.

D’Angelo Virgo
Member, Board of Directors

D’Angelo Virgo is an educator and classically trained violinist with over 25 years of musical experience. He is a member of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and National Music Teachers Association. D’Angelo has a love and passion for music and believes in delivering equitable and quality music education to urban communities. He also believes that music is a language that speaks to the heart and soul of every person transcending race, religions, ethnic background, sexual orientation and so much more.

Britton Williams
Member, Board of Directors

Dr. Britton Williams is a practitioner and educator in NYU's Drama Therapy program. Britton has presented nationally and internationally on methods and applications of Drama Therapy, extending beyond clinical settings. In this capacity, Britton uses drama therapeutic techniques with organizations, companies, schools, and universities to help guide and facilitate discussions on cultural humility and awareness; implementing creativity in the workday for increased employee engagement, team-building, and productivity; and self-care. Britton is a member of the inaugural Mellon Humanities Public Fellows cohort.

Marisol S. Norris
Founder & Chief Executive Officer
Secretary, Board of Directors

Dr. Marisol Norris is the founder and CEO of the Black Music Therapy Network, Inc., an arts therapies educator, researcher, consultant, and cultural worker. A leading scholar of Black aesthetics in music therapy, Dr. Norris has presented internationally, expanding the applied practice of radical healing frameworks within healthcare. Her work focuses on the human need for wholeness and the liberatory function of artistic processes within Black communities. Her work stems from a focused commitment to abolitionist work that centers radical visions of Black humanity and liberation.
